What are the top 10 most popular American chips?

Our guilty pleasure that makes us happy is devouring the best American-made chips. Learn about the top 10 American chip brands and why consumers love them.

10 Best American Chips

1. Doritos

The orange dust that these addictive triangle-shaped chips leave behind practically begs to be licked. It's also challenging to stop eating Doritos until the bag is empty, despite the fact that the ingredient list for the flavored tortilla chips is longer than the list of the chips themselves.
One of the happiest places on earth, Disneyland, is where Doritos made their debut. Later, when the American fast food chain started selling Doritos Locos Tacos made with Dorito chip shells, the joy persisted at thousands of Taco Bell locations. They also bring us joy.

2. Pringles

One of the best inventions in the world of snack food is Pringles. Scientists tasked with developing non-greasy chips that didn't break in the bag came up with the curve-shaped 'crisps', which are sold in cylindrical containers. These stackable chips, which come in contemporary flavors like Hot Honey and Philly Cheesesteak, are the most well-liked American chips not made by Frito-Lay.

No matter where we are in the world, we love to take stacks of Pringles out of their cylinder and pop them in our mouths. This includes nations like Portugal, Thailand, and Vietnam. As a former Proctor & Gamble product, Pringles are now produced by Kellogg's, a multinational corporation best known for making breakfast cereal. Ingredients include corn flour, rice flour, and wheat starch in addition to dehydrated potatoes.

Despite being called Pringles Newfangled Potato at first

3. Ruffles

We learned that Ruffles have ridges from old commercials. Not just any ridges, though. These deep ridges have the ideal texture for clinging to traditional dips like ranch and sour cream and onion. We don't need dip when we eat Ruffles chips though, despite the deep ridges. We appreciate that the only three ingredients in crunchy Ruffles (the original flavor) chips are potatoes, vegetable oil, and salt. Let's be clear: Flavored Ruffles chips contain extra flavor enhancers like MSG, so they don't really require the aforementioned dips. With their All-Dressed Ruffles, which combine ketchup, salt, vinegar, and barbecue sauce, Canadians go even further. Although the majority of American retailers don't carry this flavor, curious customers can purchase a bag on Amazon.

4. Fritos

We enjoy munching on the original Fritos chips without being corny (ouch!). The traditional corn chips have a certain familiarity and coziness about them. We feel more at ease knowing that corn, corn oil, and salt were the only three ingredients in the original Fritos ingredient list. The great state of Texas is the origin of Fritos. According to legend, the history of the chip began when Charles Elmer Doolin purchased Gustavo Olguin's recipe for fried corn chips. The rest of the Fritos saga went down in the annals of snack food.
Over the past nine decades, additional flavors and shapes have joined the Fritos fiesta. There are cheese and tomato powder-flavored Fritos as well as low-salt Fritos. Additionally, there is a special "scoop"-shaped Frito that is perfect for scooping dip.

5. Zapp’s

Zapp's Voodoo Chips cast a spell on us when we first went to New Orleans more than ten years ago. The colorful striped bags of Cajun-style kettle chips were then exclusive to Louisiana. After Ron Zappe's death, Utz Quality Foods of Pennsylvania later acquired Zapp's in 2011. Zapp's chips are still produced in Louisiana, but they are now available in Philadelphia's convenience stores. Hooray! Not your typical potato chips, Zapp's. Potatoes are sliced thickly and fried in peanut oil by the company. But when Cajun spices are added, voodoo, or black magic, takes place. The end result is comparable to an edible Mardi Gras party. The flavors of Zapp's chips are more potent than any other American potato chips we've tried, and they don't come out evenly.

6. Cheetos

While there are some aspects of eating Cheetos that we can agree to disagree on, there are others.

We enjoy the same addictive puffed corn snack that tastes like cheddar cheese, and we don't feel bad about licking the orange smear that invariably remains on our fingers. We also agree without a doubt that the Cheetos brand is among the best-known American chip brands. Which Cheetos style is superior is the topic of our disagreement.

Daryl prefers the puffier Cheetos, which were introduced more than two decades after Mindi prefers the original crunchy Cheetos, which were introduced three years after the end of World War II. Don't even get us started on the 1989 arrival of Flamin' Hot Cheetos. We are unsure of what

7. Takis

Before our recent exploration of the wonderful world of American chips, we had never heard of Takis. Although we don't know how it happened, we aren't too proud to acknowledge our prior ignorance. Despite the fact that Takis were created in Mexico, we are not overly ethnocentric to include them in our guide. Mexico is after all a member of the Americas. We were confused by the unusual shape and bright color of our bag of Fuego Takis chips before realizing that Takis are rolled tortilla chips dusted with a hot red powder. But what did we think of the flavor of lime and hot chili pepper?

Takis have a distinctive flavor from every other chip in this list. Fuego means "fire" in Spanish, and that is exactly what our mouths tasted.

8. Sun Chips

The 100% whole grain Sun Chips appear to be a healthy alternative to regular chips. The factoid prominently displayed right in the middle of the bag has informed us of this. Additionally, Sun Chips bags state that the chips are free of artificial flavors and are heart-healthy. Everything seems too good to be true, and it is. Sun Chips do, in fact, contain whole grain wheat as claimed, in addition to whole corn. Sugar and the processed corn ingredient maltodextrin are other unhealthful ingredients. We particularly enjoy the Harvest Cheddar Sun Chips flavor because, you guessed it, it tastes like cheddar cheese. Although we enjoy eating them on their own, we prefer them when they are combined with

9. Tostitos

The existence of Tostitos is evidence that improvements can always be made to tortilla chips. With only corn, vegetable oil, and salt, Frito-Lay accomplished this feat with impressive efficiency. In hindsight, Frito-Lay could have easily coasted with its triangle-shaped Tostitos, which go great with salsa and queso dips. However, the large corporation created Tostito Scoops, essentially revolutionizing the taco-chip salsa scooping experience. The innovation of Frito-Lay didn't end with the design of its Tostito chips. Additionally, the business sells a popular line of salsas and queso dips in jars under the Tostitos brand, and it recently debuted bottled sauces dubbed Tostito Toppers.

10. Lay’s Potato Chips

When it comes to the original Lay's Potato Chips, simplicity reigns supreme. The only ingredients listed for the chip are potatoes, vegetable oil, and salt. Furthermore, the company's catchphrase "Betcha Can't Eat Just One" isn't exaggerated. Try to eat just one chip, we dare you. The flavor of Lay's potato chips is reminiscent of youth. Actually, they taste like fried potatoes, but if you're a member of Generation X like us and you remember pulling bags of Lay's chips out of your Scooby Doo or Brady Bunch lunchboxes, you get the idea. At that time, Lay's offered original potato chips in a variety of bag sizes, along with barbecue and sour cream and onion flavors. Today, there are many different flavors of Lay's potato chips.
